 THE PROJECT

Culturally, there has been some dispute over whether towns such as Woodford Green, South Woodford, Ilford, Barkingside, and other towns within the borough of Redbridge, are in London or Essex. This is partly for historical reasons as when the London Borough of Redbridge was created in 1965, Ilford was amalgamated with Wanstead, Woodford and parts of Chigwell and Dagenham. Some people who saw this change still feel that these areas are in Essex, rather than London. However, there are other factors that influence this confusion with Redbridge’s identity. Recent representations of ‘Essex culture’ have largely influenced how people perceive these areas, and have arguably widened the gap between identities of London and Essex.

To celebrate the borough of Redbridge and its 50th anniversary, Eastside Community Heritage recorded and documented the people’s story of the borough. The people of Redbridge were invited to contribute to an exhibition and to participate in research and reminiscence training from Eastside Community Heritage. For those with an interest in arts and heritage this was an exciting opportunity to gain valuable archive and community engagement experience, and to join the lively debate about whether Redbridge is London or Essex. We held local history talks around the borough and a talk at Redbridge Central Library concluded the event series, with work from all participants displayed and discussed.
